We
are proud to introduce Carter G. Woodson's "The
Miseducation of the Negro" on an audio disc
collection. The Miseducation of the Negro, 1st
published in 1933, illustrates various behavioral
patterns relating to how Black Americans cope
with prejudice, ignorance and intolerance while
going about their everyday lives. The profoundly
personable, emotional, and political Dr. Woodson
also speaks on the social conditions that influence
Black Americans’ position in society.

Carter G. Woodson
(1875-1950)
Dr.
Woodson was born December 19th, 1875 in New Canton,
West Virginia. His parents were former slaves and very
poor. Woodson spent much of his early years working
in coal mines to help support his family. He started
high school at age twenty. Dr. Woodson completed a four
year curriculum in less than two years at Douglass High
School in Huntington, West Virginia where he became
a teacher and ultimately, the principal. He attended
at some time Berea College in Kentucky, yet received
his Bachelor and Master degrees at the University of
Chicago. He was the second black to graduate from Harvard
with a Doctorate, second to W.E.B.Du Bois. He was a
member of the Niagara Movement, which led to the founding
of the NAACP. He worked with such greats as W.E.B. Du
Bois, Marcus Garvey, Booker T. Washington, and A. Philip
Randolph. Dr. Woodson died in 1950 while working on
a six volume Encyclopedia Africana. Dr. Woodson became
a distinguished author, editor, publisher, and historian
who strongly believed that Black History (which others
have so diligently tried to erase) is a firm foundation
for Black America to build on in order to become productive
citizens of our society.
